Tear switches are mounted in pairs on either side of the belt and are connected by two sections of vinyl clad aviation wire rope. One end of the rope is permanently attached to the support bracket and the other end is attached to a spring ball on the tear switch. The two pieces of string form a closed loop under the belt. A fault is detected when an object or torn belt is suspended and sweeps off one or both cords. It pulls the spring ball out of the base because the cord is detached, causing two microswitches to alarm or shut off the conveyor.
